We Want Freedom for All A Jewish Anarchist Statement

We Want Freedom for All

A Jewish Anarchist Statement

Published by the Libertarian Worker’s Group

  1. FROM THE PAST TO THE PRESENT

Back in 1889, amidst the squalor and destitution of New York’s Lower East Side, a group of young Jewish workers created the first anarchist journal to be published in Yiddish, Di Varhayt (The Truth). After 20 issues, the paper was reconstituted as Di Frei Arbeiter Shtimme (The Free Voice of Labor), and for the next 86 years it served as one of the major forums of anarchist thought in the Yiddish-speaking world as well as a leading journal of the Jewish labor movement and Yiddish subculture.

It[sic] its heyday, Di Frei Arbeiter Shtimme was the voice of a movement composed of thousands of Jewish working women and men who were not only fighting the bosses in the sweatshops but also combatting domination and exploitation wherever encountered: in their unions, in their communities, in their homes and schools. They defied the puritanical conventions of their day by advocating such things as noncoercive open education, sexual freedom and equality, free love, birth control, atheism, resistance to conscription, and direct action against the capitalist system, militarism, and the State.

With the closing of Di Frei Arbeiter Shtimme in 1978 came the end of an era. Long in decline, the closing of the paper and the death of the movement behind it illuminated several shifts which have become apparent since the 1930’s. The vibrant Yiddish culture of the Jewish immigrant working class – its language, literature, music, theatre, political and social institutions – has all but disappeared from contemporary Jewish life, jettisoned like so much excess baggage in the dirve for acceptance and upward mobility in American society.

The Jewish communities and Jewish youth of today identify more with American and/or Israeli culture and political institutions than they do with Yiddishkeit and the revolutionary social aspirations and struggles of the bygone immigrant days. The older Jewish socialists and anarchists, who found[sic] and fought in the “Jewish” unions, have generally moved to the right as the unions themselves have become increasingly undemocratic and bureaucratized.

Yet still there are Jewish anarchists.

We identify ourselves as Jews because our primary cultural affiliation is with the Jewish people. Our “Jewishness” rests on cultural and political traditions as well as an awareness of anti-Semitism here and abroad, which has almost forced community upon us. While we reject nationalism and theocracy as well as the authoritarian and sexist aspects of Jewish life, we find in our past a tradition of free thought and militance which must be constantly revolutionized and revitalized.

We are anarchists because we align ourselves with that movement and theory which poses the most radical challenge to the state and capitalism: which proposes a society based on the free asociation and cooperation of individuals for mutual aid and the production of real social wealth, without bosses or classes of any sort. In other words, a society in which people control their own lives and not each other. Our anarchism is class-based because we are workers and it therefore reflects our day-to-day concerns and struggles for human dignity, environmental and occupational safety, and democratic self-management of our workplaces, communities and schools.

Like many young Jews growing up in the 60’s and 70’s, we were led by our concerns as Jews and as people committed to social justice to seek out progressive Jewish alternatives to the reactionary institutions that dominate Jewish life in America. Most of us participated in the various movements of the Jewish left, such as the Jewish Socialist Youth Bund, the Radical Zionist Alliance, the Jewish Liberation Project, and the leftist-Zionist youth movements. While we encountered good ideas and good intentions in all of these groups, we were not satisfied with their overall perspectives on contemporary social struggle and Jewish life in America.

The left, in general, did not seem to be much more of a viable alternative, with its adherence to sectarianism, statism, and political authoritarianism. We turned to the libertarian left and found in it a revolutionary movement and analysis which corresponded with our own views. Returning to the heritage of the Jewish labor movement, we found a strong libertarian current within the tradition of Jewish working-class radicalism, which despite its unjustified obscurity is still viable today-namely, anarchism.

From our perspective as Jewish anarchists, we recognize that the liberation of the Jewish people is inextricably bound up with that of humanity as a whole. This liberation can only happen by means of the revolutionary reorganization of society.

We believe that every oppressed group must take control of its own destiny and must take control of its own destiny and liberate itself. This, however, cannot be achieved in a vacuum, isolated from the struggles of the rest of oppressed humanity. True liberation will only be achieved in the context of a universal social struggle for a new world order.

Therefore, while participating in the Jewush[sic] struggle for survival and autonomy, we actively support and take part in the following:

  1. Opposition to all forms of discrimination and oppression that bar people from fully participating in society and realizing their total potential as free individuals because of their age, sex, race, nationality, sexual orientation, economic/social class, or disability.

  2. Solidarity with working and oppressed peoples’ struggles throughout the world.

  3. The building of a revolutionary, democratic labor movement through autonomous, rank-and-file self-activity.

  4. Opposition to those forms and uses of technology which pose serious threats to public health and safety as well as the overall negligent abuse and destruction of our environment.

  5. Opposition to war, militarism, conscription, and the arms race.

  6. Autonomous movements such as community organizations, self-help networks, and alternative educational, media, and cultural projects that seek to create self-managing, democratic non-hieracrhical alternatives to the State and the established order.

In all our endeavors, we oppose party building, political manipulation, and attempts to centralize activity and communication. Only through militant self-activity, self-organization, and self-direction can a revolutionary democratic movement develop. Consequently, we reject utilizing the political and legislative machinery of the State as a vehicle for fundamental social change. We advocate, instead, popular forms of democratically coordinated direct attention such as general strikes, mass occupations, boycotts, etc., to directly confront the system and, ultimately, to reclaim control of our lives and our world.

II. STATE AND CULTURE

We live in a society that embodies the principle of authority, that is, the rule of one individual or group over another. In such a society, the culture/religion/ideology of the group in power necessarily becomes that of the State. The options for the powerless minority groups are, at best, social disadvantage, pressure to assimilate or conformity; at worst, repression and genocide.

This has been the situation of the Jewish people for the past 2,000 years. The Jewish people have always constituted a distinct cultural/religious entity. Their inability and/or unwillingness to assimilate has ofren[sic] made the Jews easy scapegoats to diver[sic] the discontent and frustration of the people.

It can be argued that in liberal democracies, the Jew is a free citizen with full equality. For the most part, this is true for the Jew as an individual, but for the Jew as a member of a distinct culture and ethnic group seeking to preserve its identity, the situation is entirely different. Of course there is not brutal repression or genocide against Jews here in the U.S. at the present. Nontheless, the Jews, like every other ethnic group or national minority, must engage in a desperate fight against assimilation and communal disintegration.

The enemy in any oppressed people’s struggle for survival and autonomy is never another people, even though it may be their culture which is forced upon us and in their name that we are oppressed. It is the very nature and structure of class society that creates the objective conditions for the emergence of anti-Semitism and all other forms of intolerance and oppression. So long as society institutionalizes violence, exploitation and domination; so long as people are forced to sell themselves and compete with each other in order to survive; so long as human life is considered expendable for the sake of power and profit, there will be oppressed and oppressors.

Ultimately, there can be but one enemy in any struggle for liberation-every social system based on social stratification, wage-labor and the institution of the State. The State is the hierarchical apparatus through which the ruling class protects its power and its interests, both domestic and foreign. It is an integral part of any social and economic system in which a ruling class dominates and exploits the rest of society. The authority of the State ultimately rests solely on coercion and armed force. It legitimizes its existence by invoking nationalism, religion and ideology.

But while coercion and armed force are the bulwark of the State, conformity is its foundation. With regards to national culture, we can see that cultural hegemony is part and parcel of social and political control. Throughout history it has always been achieved by replacing thousands of years of popular creativity and folk process with a bland, homogenized pseudo-culture organized around patriotism, the real purpose of which is to promote a false sense of unity of interests with the State and the ruling class.

There are, however, many instances when the State seems to promote ethnic diversity by encouraging minority groups to stage cultural events, or even funds ethnic cultural and educational programs and institutions. Needless to say, these are merely token gestures. The tactics can change but the goal will always remain the same – cultural hegemony, either through assimilation or by co-opting and neutralizing the minority.

The State is aided in its efforts by a handful of individuals who have “made it” and are beholden to the system for their power and privileges. These “respected community leaders” cynically use the traditions and institutions of their community to impse[sic] ideology of the ruling class and, consequently, assimilation on their own people.

The Jewish establishment is no exception. To be sure, it is not interested in creating a vibrant Jewish culture. The primary concern of the Jewish establishment is strengthening those organizations and institutions which enable them to maintain control over the Jewish community and share in political power in general.

III. RESTRUCTURING THE JEWISH COMMUNITY

Just as society as a whole must be restructured, so too the Jewish community must be restructured. The control of Jewish communal life can no longer be the private domain of the self-appointed, self-perpetuating “macherarchy,” i.e., the established Jewish organizations and their leadership. Administration of communal resources- cultural, educational and social institutions, communal funds, etc. – must be decentralized and democratic. New forms of communal organization must be developed that will enable every member of the community to fully participate in all aspects of Jewish communal life, to share in every level of decision-making, and to have equal access to all communal resources.

The philanthropic apparatus that exists ostensibly to facilitate efficient fund-raising and distribution for communal needs has become so bureaucratizes and centralized that it does not serve the community and, in fact, has become effectively divorced from the realities and needs of the present-day Jewish community. Being organs of a Jewish establishment rather than voluntary associations of the Jewish community as a whole, the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies, United Jewish Appeal, etc., exist only to centralize control of communal resources into the hands of their leadership, allowing them to impose their own agenda on Jewish communal life. The consequence is that Jewish social services are shamefully inadequate, inefficient, and dehumanizing in their dealings with both recipients and employees. The real needs of the community are often forced to take a back seat to the self-aggrandizing projects of the Jewish establishment, such as building luxurious synagogues and over-priced hospitals that the great bulk of the community will never set foot in.

It is clear that what is needed in the community is a return to the Jewish tradition of mutual aid and responsibility. The immigrant Jewish working class managed to “take care of its own” long before the days of large scale government social services, through an extensive network of self-help organizations such as landsmanshaft societies and Arbeiter Ring (Workmen’s Circle), etc. We should draw upon their example by dismantling the current philanthropic bureaucracy and replacing it with a decentralized network of community based self-help organisations that would include everything from schools for the young to senior citizens centers, administered by the members and supported by the community. Through direct participation and direct democracy, all members of the community can derive a sense of individual dignity and worth, as well as a sense of empowerment, which is a crucial first step in the struggle for the elimination of authority and domination in society as a whole.

However, before we can even begin to restructure and revitalize the Jewish community we must develop a new understanding of it. Our community today is not a monolithic, homogenous entity, but rather an amalgam of amny[sic] different ethnic, political and even religious groups. We have not only Jews of Eastern European background, but also Jews from other parts of Europe, from Israel, South America, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia, all with our own languages, traditions and customs. Our religious beliefs run the gamut from atheist to orthodox and our political beliefs from Anarchist to Zionist. Our community contains a wide variety of lifestyles and sexual preferences, both traditional and non-traditional.

What binds us together is a personal affirmation of our membership in the Jewish people, a sense of personal affinity with a heritage and a culture, no matter how we may choose to express it. Recognizing this we must reject all attempts to impose one groups’ culture, language or beliefs on the rest of the Jewish community and strive toward a pluralistic community of communities. Only by broadening our perspectives and expanding on the values of social justice, mutual aid and responsibility, direct democracy and free discussion and debate inherent in Jewish culture, can we evolve as a free people in every sense of the term.

IV. RELIGION AND CULTURE

Throughout the history of the Jewish anarchist movement, we Jewish anarchists have been accused of trying to destroy Judaism and promote assimilation, due to our outspoken atheism and secular orientation. What we have consistently opposed and continue to oppose in Judaism are not folk customs and traditions but rather the theocratic conventions that uphold patriarchal sexism, adherence to authority as well as the mystification and simplification of life and the universe which is inherent in all theologies.

We utterly reject the current debate on “Who is a Jew,” particularly when it is utilized by the Israeli government and religious authorities to determine government policy on immigration, citizenship, etc. As we stated before, Jewish identity is a matter of personal choice and affirmation. We oppose any attempts by any authority outside that of a personal conscience to dictate the meaning of Jewishness. Similarly, we are determined to resist every incursion into our private lives by any and all religious authorities, especially when they threaten the rights of every individual to control their bodies as well as their life style.

We support the efforts of many Jews today seeking to develop a creative Jewish lifestyle outside the narrow framework of establishment Judaism. One encouraging example of this is the Havurah movement. The Havurah or “fellowship” is a small, autonomous circle of friends and neighbors that get together to create their own approach to the study and practice of Judaism based on their own beliefs and lifestyles. Aside from the Havurah movement there are many other examples of emerging alternatives, such as cooperatives and collectives of various sorts, as well as new educational, cultural and media projects, all of which strive to reclaim Jewish heritage and culture and instill positice[sic] social consciousness in contemporary Jewish life. Despite the fact that this progressive trend is still small and outside the mainstream of the community, we hope that these efforts will come to capture the imagination of the Jewish community as a whole and become the basis of a new sense of Jewish existence and community.

V. ZIONISM

The Jewish anarchist movement has consistently opposed political Zionism since the inception of that movement in 1897. We reject the notion that Zionism is the liberation movement of the Jewish people. Zionism, like all other nationalist political movements has as its goal the establishment and perpetuation of a nation-state. As we stated earlier, the nation-state is, by the very nature of its hierarchic structure, the primary instrument of class rule, militarism and imperialism. As we shall show, the State of Israel is no exception to this rule.

Since the beginning of the 19th century modern political nationalism has been the major force that has shaped the world political order. Its organization form, the centralized nation-state, has become the mode of political organization throughout the world. When oppressed peoples have liberated themselves from the bonds of colonialism and foreign domination they established a nation-state through which to exercise their national sovereignty. Yet a close look at history and the current world situation shows that “national liberation” through the means of the nation-state is just a matter of replacing foreign bosses with native ones, and that in the current era that national sovereignty and self-determination are myths.

The new nation-states created by triumphant nationalist movements have invariably wound up as the product and property of the national bourgeoisie, who usually made up the leadership of those movements anyway. Since the triumph of the Bolshevik counter-revolution in Russia an increasingly common phenomenon is the rise to power of a bureaucratic “new class” composed of functionaries, technocrats and those intellectuals who place themselves at the service of the new “people’s” state. In either case the result has been the continuation of class rule and the brutal repression of those who fought to create the new state under the banner of “freedom” and found only continued slavery.

In most cases, the new nation-states have based their rule on previously existing relations of power and domination and which they quickly incorporate into the new social structure. Even the so-called socialist revolutions of the 20th century have wound up with the “socialist” state taking up many of the most hated aspects of the old regime. Israel is somewhat different in this respect since its social structure is the result of the Zionist effort to superimpose a Jewish nation-state with a Jewish majority on a country where the overwhelming population was Palestinian-Arab. In order to accomplish this the Zionist movement had to create exclusively Jewish political, social and economic structure based solely on the labor of the Jewish immigrants and not the resident Arab workforce. Without going into detail on how this was accomplished, the result was the transformation of the Palestinian majority into a marginal minority in their own country, excluded for the most part from the mainstream of Israeli social, political and economic life.

But there is far more to the emergence of Israel as a nation-state than the conflict between Jews and Palestinians. For Israel, like any other nation-state in the modern era, is merely a unit in the international pecking order of competing nations, with superpowers on top. The end of World War II left the world divided into two camps, East and West, with Russia and the United States at the head of each.

At the same time a rising Third World nationalism played a major role in the dissolution of the old empires and in the establishment of new states. These new nation-states followed the pattern we stated earlier, where a new ruling class simply replaced the old imperialist regime. Israel was no exception to the rule. In its case, the ruling elite was the Ashkenazic Zionist establishment.

At the same time, the self-determinationsought[sic] by the anti-colonialist movements turned out to be a sham, as the newly independent nations, as well as the already existing states, were drawn either into one camp or another. Any who attempted to resist were crushed outright or sooner or later co-opted. We can only look at the history of the Non-Aligned Movement to see this process at work. Israel, having been born in 1948, was inevitably subject to this dynamic and soon drawn into the Western camp. Today it has become a major vehicle for American foreign policy in the Middle East. So much for the Zionist dream of national independence for the Jews.

There are some who contend, as the Zionist movement does, that no matter what Israel’s position in the Western camp, it remains the primary means of Jewish liberation. Yet Israel has been in existence since 1948 and only a small part of the entire world Jewish population lives there. The situation of world Jewry is still tenuous. Anti-semitism is on the rise and many communities are threatened with repression, if not annihilation. Yet what has Israel done to prevent this situation? It has sold arms to regimes like Iran and Argentina which repress Jews, and has even demanded, in the case of Soviet Jewry, that the U.S. bar its doors to those Soviet Jews who refuse to emigrate to Israel.

When confronted with this, Zionists offer the lame excuse that Israel is a small country and must worry about its own survival first. This is exactly the point. Israel is only a small country, racked with problems, both internal and external. How then can its existence protect Jews in every corner of the world? The best it can offer is refuge, and refuge is not liberation.

The Zionist panacea for all the problems that the modern Jew must confron[sic] today, whether it be anti-semitism, assimilation or any other “tsores,” is Aliya, that is, emigration to Israel. While there is a handful of Jews who feel an idealistic affinity with “The Land” and who seek to fulfill their ideals through Aliya, the majority of Jews are not so inclined. The Israeli government seeks to compensate for this lack of idealism with tax inducements and special privileges for new Olim (immigrants), particularly those from the West. This policy has caused a great deal of resentment in Israel, especially among the “Oriental” Jews. These Jews, who make up the majority of the Israeli population, came to Israel with nothing but dreams and promises, only to find disappointment and discrimination.

Zionism, no different from any other movement seeking political power had to gain political hegemony in the Jewish community before it could achieve the establishment of a nation-state. It did this by absorbing the Jewish establishment, and supplanting indigenous Jewish cultures with its own Hebrew culture.

Once in the Jewish community, there was a whole spectrum of political movements and beliefs, now there is some official ideology, with little dissent tolerated. Dissenters from Zionism are labeled “self-hating” Jews and are ostracized. Efforts are turned toward promoting Hebrew culture as the Jewish culture, while Yiddish, Ladino and every other Jewish culture now at the verge of extinction, are left to their fates.

VI. THEIR ANTI-ZIONISM AND OURS

Our opposition to Zionism has nothing to do with the current anti-Israel crusade being waged by the Arab/Islamtic[sic] states and their allies. Their anti-Zionism stems from opportunistic, political self-interest. Our opposition stems from principled disagreement rooted in historical debate. Their objective is a new political power base, ours is revolution.

Unlike most of the left, we do not put down one form of nationalism in favor of another. From our perspective, the P.L.O. is simply a nation-state without a permanent territory of its own (though it can be argued that Lebanon is in fact its territory). The P.L.O. has its own standing army, bureaus of government, and means of enforcing its power (witness the assassinations of Palestinians who stray from the P.L.O line). It is not inconceivable that despite the fierce hatred that exists between these two states, Israel and the P.L.O. can negotiate an official peace. State are not guided by ideals and ideologies, but by practical self-interest.

A P.L.O. state on the West Bank will be no better or worse than any other regime in the area. It will stifle its opposition and streamline its political program to secure its power. Of course, since the West Bank has no real industries or resources of its own, it will most certainly be dependent on the richer Arab/Islamic states and/or either of the big superpowers. We can also speculate that it will probably resume economic relations with its most hated enemy, the Zionist State of Israel.

While we reject the P.L.O., we most vehemently oppose the military occupation of the “administered territories” by Israel. We totally support the right of the Palestinian people to determine their own future, free from the manipulations of all powers, whether it be Israel, the P.L.O., or anyone else. Though we oppose the current political system in Israel, we, nevertheless, equally support the right of the Israeli Jewish community to determine its own destiny.

VII. OUR VISION

We support those forces in Israel, the Mid-East, and the world in general, seeking to create real peace and understanding among the peoples of the Middle-East. However, it is not enough to bank on negotiated treaties between nation states. States cannot and will not create real peace. All the can offer is an armed truce. Real peace can only come about when the working and oppressed peoples of the world transcend the facade of nationalism and religious dogma and the systems which maintain their power and privilege.

Our vision for the Middle-East and the world in general is a decentralized, supra-national federation of peoples based on free association and generalized self-management, in which the earth’s resources are shared and accessible to all in an atmosphere of freedom, equality, and peace. The Jewish people will take its place in this new world order not as a centralized nation-state, but as an autonomous community of communities, with complete control over its own communal resources and its own future.

Letter from Mahmoud Khalil, a Political Prisoner in an ICE Detention Centre

Mahmoud Khalil being detained. Source

Mahmoud Khalil is a student and political activist who was a leading figure in the Columbia University campus protests sparked by Israel's invasion of Gaza and its collective punishment tactics. As punishment for his activism, he has been targeted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) who are working to revoke his student Visa and arrested him on the 8th of March. Currently, he is in an ICE detention centre.

There is no accusation of criminality against Mahmoud Khalil, the legal grounds for this repressive act is being justified by invoking the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952, a McCarthyite era piece of legislation designed to punish migrants who become too bothersome to ignore. Personally, I would be opposed to the actions against Mahmoud Khalil even if there were criminal charges, but I bring this up to demonstrate that this is a deliberate targeting aimed at intimidating others from resisting.

The Letter is taken from the Centre for Constitutional Rights

Letter from a Palestinian Political Prisoner in Louisiana
Dictated over the phone from ICE Detention
March 18, 2025

My name is Mahmoud Khalil and I am a political prisoner. I am writing to you from a detention facility in
Louisiana where I wake to cold mornings and spend long days bearing witness to the quiet injustices
underway against a great many people precluded from the protections of the law.
Who has the right to have rights? It is certainly not the humans crowded into the cells here. It isn’t the
Senegalese man I met who has been deprived of his liberty for a year, his legal situation in limbo and his
family an ocean away. It isn’t the 21-year-old detainee I met, who stepped foot in this country at age nine,
only to be deported without so much as a hearing.

Justice escapes the contours of this nation’s immigration facilities.
On March 8, I was taken by DHS agents who refused to provide a warrant, and accosted my wife and me
as we returned from dinner. By now, the footage of that night has been made public. Before I knew what
was happening, agents handcuffed and forced me into an unmarked car. At that moment, my only concern
was for Noor’s safety. I had no idea if she would be taken too, since the agents had threatened to arrest her
for not leaving my side. DHS would not tell me anything for hours — I did not know the cause of my
arrest or if I was facing immediate deportation. At 26 Federal Plaza, I slept on the cold floor. In the early
morning hours, agents transported me to another facility in Elizabeth, New Jersey. There, I slept on the
ground and was refused a blanket despite my request.

My arrest was a direct consequence of exercising my right to free speech as I advocated for a free
Palestine and an end to the genocide in Gaza, which resumed in full force Monday night. With January’s
ceasefire now broken, parents in Gaza are once again cradling too-small shrouds, and families are forced
to weigh starvation and displacement against bombs. It is our moral imperative to persist in the struggle
for their complete freedom.

I was born in a Palestinian refugee camp in Syria to a family which has been displaced from their land
since the 1948 Nakba. I spent my youth in proximity to yet distant from my homeland. But being
Palestinian is an experience that transcends borders. I see in my circumstances similarities to Israel’s use
of administrative detention — imprisonment without trial or charge — to strip Palestinians of their rights.
I think of our friend Omar Khatib, who was incarcerated without charge or trial by Israel as he returned
home from travel. I think of Gaza hospital director and pediatrician Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, who was
taken captive by the Israeli military on December 27 and remains in an Israeli torture camp today. For
Palestinians, imprisonment without due process is commonplace.

I have always believed that my duty is not only to liberate myself from the oppressor, but also to liberate
my oppressors from their hatred and fear. My unjust detention is indicative of the anti-Palestinian racism
that both the Biden and Trump administrations have demonstrated over the past 16 months as the U.S. has
continued to supply Israel with weapons to kill Palestinians and prevented international intervention. For
decades, anti-Palestinian racism has driven efforts to expand U.S. laws and practices that are used to
violently repress Palestinians, Arab Americans, and other communities. That is precisely why I am being
targeted.

While I await legal decisions that hold the futures of my wife and child in the balance, those who enabled
my targeting remain comfortably at Columbia University. Presidents Shafik, Armstrong, and Dean
Yarhi-Milo laid the groundwork for the U.S. government to target me by arbitrarily disciplining
pro-Palestinian students and allowing viral doxing campaigns — based on racism and disinformation —
to go unchecked.

Columbia targeted me for my activism, creating a new authoritarian disciplinary office to bypass due
process and silence students criticizing Israel. Columbia surrendered to federal pressure by disclosing
student records to Congress and yielding to the Trump administration's latest threats. My arrest, the
expulsion or suspension of at least 22 Columbia students — some stripped of their B.A. degrees just
weeks before graduation — and the expulsion of SWC President Grant Miner on the eve of contract
negotiations, are clear examples.

If anything, my detention is a testament to the strength of the student movement in shifting public opinion
toward Palestinian liberation. Students have long been at the forefront of change — leading the charge
against the Vietnam War, standing on the frontlines of the civil rights movement, and driving the struggle
against apartheid in South Africa. Today, too, even if the public has yet to fully grasp it, it is students who
steer us toward truth and justice.

The Trump administration is targeting me as part of a broader strategy to suppress dissent. Visa-holders,
green-card carriers, and citizens alike will all be targeted for their political beliefs. In the weeks ahead,
students, advocates, and elected officials must unite to defend the right to protest for Palestine. At stake
are not just our voices, but the fundamental civil liberties of all.

Knowing fully that this moment transcends my individual circumstances, I hope nonetheless to be free to
witness the birth of my first-born child.

FJU Statement Supporting Platforming of Palestinian Journalists

In Support of Platforming Palestinian Journalists

In response to the prevalence of Zionist propaganda regarding the State of Israel’s ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip, as well as deteriorating economic conditions in the West Bank due to the Israeli occupation’s escalating violence there, the Industrial Workers of the World Freelance Journalists Union calls upon journalists and editors reporting on Palestine to platform Palestinian journalists as sources and to prioritize them for commissions.

At the time of this writing, at least 152 journalists in both Gaza and the West Bank have been killed by Israeli forces since October 2023. Despite the danger, our Palestinian fellow workers risk life and limb every day to show the world the brutality inflicted upon them and their people. Their courage deserves not only our respect and solidarity, but material support.

To that end, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate (PJS) is willing and able to connect journalists and editors to its English-speaking members. Especially in the last year, the work of Palestinian journalists has been a crucial driver of support for the liberation of Palestine. By offering to make these connections, PJS is providing journalists and editors with a direct line to the people doing that work, as well as a way to ensure that work continues. To be connected with English-speaking PJS members, please contact Shuruq Asad of the union’s general secretariat at: shuruqasad@icloud.com.

Time and time again, we have seen English-speaking news media refuse to acknowledge the State of Israel’s role in murdering our colleagues. Such cowardice has no place in the IWW FJU. We must reject all editorial decisions that fail to frame killing journalists as just that: killing journalists.

As always, the IWW FJU stands in solidarity with our fellow workers in Palestine. Solidarity forever!

Solidarity on International Day for Palestinian Journalists

Solidarity on International Day for Palestinian Journalists

The Industrial Workers of the World Freelance Journalists Union stands in solidarity with our colleagues in Israeli-occupied Palestine. In the 140 days since October 7, nearly 120 journalists have been killed in Gaza and the West Bank — almost one per day. The increasingly scant resources available to Palestinians has exacerbated the conditions on the ground, making Gaza the most dangerous place in the world to be a journalist.

To celebrate the bravery and critical work being done to cover atrocities by the Israeli military, the IWW FJU is joining the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and the International Federation of Journalists for an International Day for Palestinian Journalists on Monday, February 26. (Please see below for the original call from the PJS.)

In response to declining financial support for Palestinian journalists and coverage of the ongoing genocide, we advocate that journalists everywhere pitch at least one story about Gaza on February 26, and that our members and supporters continue to contribute to the PJS via the IFJ We echo the call to mobilize your union, newsroom or workplace to join a rally and speak out for the freedom of the press and the rights of all Palestinians.

Solidarity forever!

INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR PALESTINIAN JOURNALISTS

On February 26, everywhere in the world, let's mobilize!

Ramallah, 21 February 2024,

Dear colleagues, Four months after the start of the war in Gaza, the PJS highly appreciate the mobilization and support received by free people, represented in different bodies, all around the world, which has a clear impact in supporting Palestinian journalists knowing that they are not alone and started to mobilize international community in taking actions towards the genocide taking place in Gaza.

Unfortunately, although the number of killed journalists and media workers, which has reached almost 120, is increasing and reaching an unprecedented level, donations through IFJ International Security Fund and other partners to PJS are less regular and much lower than during the first weeks of the conflict.

We know that each of you is mobilized elsewhere, in your representation bodies, but we encourage you to continue your efforts because the needs of journalists have become vital. In the middle of winter, our sisters and brothers and their families lack everything and especially the essentials: clothes, blankets, tents, food, water… The scarcity of these necessities in this small territory 40 km long and 5 km wide results in a surge in prices. And they can no longer afford them. We are also alarmed by the poor international coverage of the conflict, linked to the fact that international media are not authorized by Israel to enter the enclave and report on the reality there. It is the right of citizens to know the reality of the conflict in Gaza which is being violated, both in the region and in the rest of the world.

This is why the PJS in full cooperation with IFJ, the largest global network of journalists across more than 146 countries, invites you to mobilize the members of your union, journalists in editorial offices and media outlets, but also national organizations of workers on Monday, February 26, for what will be the International Day for Palestinian Journalists. Rallies, speeches, public meetings, all opportunities are necessary to remind all citizens that the freedom to inform has a price, in Gaza more than elsewhere. Let us never forget that for four months, it has been journalists from Gaza who have been informing the world because this area of a few square kilometres has been completely closed. From an open-air prison, Gaza has today become a mass grave with tens of thousands of dead, missing and injured.

Finally, around the world at noon, this February 26, 2024, we will all observe a minute of silence for the journalists killed since October 7.

Send your photos, videos, documents published during the day to the communication department at PJS - we will share them through our website. Tag us on the social media so we can relay your actions:

Thank you again for your support. Today, more than ever, it is essential.

Regards,
Nasser Abu Baker

HALTIGU LA BARBARECON ! - Stop this Barbarism the conflict in Gaza

Stop the Barbarism!

Once again the flames of war have sparked into life in the Palestine/Israel region. This time Hamas took the inciative to start the atrocities. They did not act alone in this attack, militants from the PFLP also took part in the armed assaults. The pictures are unbearable: civilians murdered in the streets, and in their homes, the taken of hostages etc.

Although the Israeli government conducts a system of political Apartheid, which has even been acknowledged by Tamir Prado, the ex-director of Israel's Intelligence service. But that does not justify the conscious murder civilians. That is as condemnable as the murder of Palestinian civilans by the Israeli army! Without a doubt the response of the Israeli government will be just as terrible as it is blind. Already buildings in Gaza are being bombed and electricity has been cut throughout the whole territory.

We can only express our deepest fears and concern for the civilian inhabitants, Palestinian and Israeli both hostages to their respective governments in this conflict, and we must remember that during these past months the civilian populations had been demonstrating against their own governments and this lethal politics; over the past weeks, especially since the 30th of July thousands of people in Gaza have been protesting against the rule of Hamas under the slogan "We Want to Live!"

At the same time in Israel, tens of thousands had repeatedly took to the streets to oppose the right wing policy of the government which was no longer capable of controlling the protests and was heading toward collapse.

The attacks by Hamas therefore have occurred while on both sides of the wall of shame thousands of people had begun to organise themeselves against their rulers.

The violence unleashed by these attacks will unite the people with their corrupt rulers and strengthen the nationalist fervour, fueled by desires for mutual revenge.

In Gaza, Hamas is calling for the whole population to rally behind its flag in an united front. Already Netanyahu has formed a government of national unity. The thousands of reservist soldiers who have been striking for weeks after announced the break up of their movement!

This attack also has an international dimension. It happened after the leader of Hamas met with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei the leader of Iran and while Saudi Arabia - an enemy of Iran- has begun building official relations with Israel. Hezbollah the terrorist puppet of Iran in Lebanon has already declared that "the attack by Hamas against Israel sends a message to anyone who tries to normalise relations with Isreal or hopes that the Palestinian struggle is dead".

In the aftermath it is the inhabitants of Israel and Gaza who will pay the price for this bloody game played between states in order to cement their own power.

Once again, those who decide to have a war are not those who die in it.

Once again, the civilian will suffer, from Sderot to Gaza. All ideologies of power, especially nationalism and religious fervour are the pillars of logic that encoruages people to kill each other for the benefit of the rulers of the world.

spionservoj Tamir Prado, tio tute ne pravigas plenkonsciajn
murdojn de civiluloj. Tio estas tiel kondamnindaj kiel
mortigo de palestinaj civiluloj fare de la israela armeo !
Sendube, la milita respondo de la israela registaro estos
same terura kaj blinda.

Solidarity with the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate

The IWW's Freelance Journalists Union (FJU) is supporting the Palestinian Journalist Syndicate PJS. Most Palestinian journalists have to source their own protective equipment, especially those who freelance or are employed by smaller networks or on a casual basis.

As the attacks on Gaza escalate this has become a dire issue. As such their is an ongoing fundraiser to purchase protective equipment for PJS members.

Link to that fundraiser is here https://gofund.me/bab101e9

The FJU is also sharing statements prepared by the PJS for international ordiances. As a member of the FJU I will also do so here.

In light of increasing violence in Israel and Palestine, the IWW Freelance Journalists Union expresses its solidarity with the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, a member of the International Federation of Journalists.

The ongoing war has already claimed the lives of at least 10 journalists, per the PJS. This current wave of killings occurs in the context of hundreds of violations and crimes against Palestinian journalists perpetrated by the Israeli occupation every year, as reported by the PJS.

To protect journalists, the PJS requires media outlets to provide safety vests, helmets and gas masks for employees, but this equipment is often unavailable to freelancers. The IWW PPWU-FJU is therefore fundraising to provide the PJS with 50 such kits for freelancers. We encourage all journalists, union members and others to support the PJS by contributing to this fundraiser and sharing widely both the fundraiser and the PJS’s most recent statement on the current war (below).

Palestinian Journalists Syndicate: In Gaza, crimes against journalists: 10 killed, 20 injured, 2 missed, 50 media institutions destroyed, more than 45 violations have taken place in the West Bank and Jerusalem, while crimes extend to journalists in Lebanon!

Ramallah, in a report issued by the Freedoms Committee of the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, it was stated that since the beginning of the aggression against the Gaza Strip on 10/7/2023, 10 Palestinian journalists have been killed by Israeli occupation aircraft missiles.

The PJS indicates that journalists in the Gaza Strip face very dangerous situation as a result of the Israeli occupation bombing, which caused the killing of 10 journalists in Palestine and one journalist in Lebanon.

In light with rapid developments during the brutal escalation in Gaza, the PJS has monitored the following crimes and violations since the start of the war on the Gaza Strip until Friday evening.

Names of killed journalists:

1. Ahmed Shehab, program producer on Voice of Prisoners Radio

2. Photojournalist Muhammad Al-Salhi, photographer of the “Fourth authority” agency

3. Freelance photojournalist Muhammad Fayez Abu Matar

4. Journalist Hisham Al-Nawajha, photographer for “Khabar” agency

5. Photojournalist Ibrahim Lafi from Ain Media Foundation

6. Journalist Saeed Al-Taweel, editor-in-chief of the Fifth News Agency

7. Journalist Muhammad Jarghoun from Smart Media Agency

8. Freelance journalist Asaad Shamal

9. Journalist Muhammad Abu Rizq, Khabar Agency photographer.

10. Freelance journalist Salam Mema, whose death was announced after being pulled from under the rubble, three days after her home was destroyed

Missing Journalists:

1. Photojournalist Nidal Al-Wahidi, who works as a producer with Al-Najah TV

2. Journalist Haitham Abdel Wahed from Ain Media Media Foundation

Serious and injuries among journalists:

Due to the difficulty of movement and communication resulting from the abundance of missile bombardment, its intensity, and its spread in many locations in the Gaza Strip, the number of injured journalists may be more than this statistic that we have been able to monitor so far.

About 20 injuries were observed, the most violent of which was in the Gaza Strip, where some of the announced injury was journalist Ibrahim Qanan, correspondent for Al-Ghad TV, freelance photographer Ali Hamad, journalist Saleh Al-Masry from the Palestine Today Agency, and photojournalist Mahmoud Al-Hams, photographer for Agence France-Presse.

Moreover, the killing of the wife of journalist Sameh Murad, “a freelance journalist who worked these days with Al Arabiya during the aggression,” and the injury of the rest of his family as the displaced people who went out toward Khan Yunis were targeted while he was working to cover the events of the aggression in Al-Shifa Hospital.

Destroying of journalists' offices and homes:

About 50 headquarters and centers of media institutions and about 20 homes for journalists were completely and some partially destroyed as a result of the bombing, including the offices of the following news agencies and media outlets:

Al-Aqsa Media Network, Ma’an News Agency, Sawa Agency, Shehab Agency, Al-Quds Newspaper, Radio Baladna, Zaman Radio, National Agency, Khabar Agency, Al-Ayyam Newspaper, Event Media Services Company, Fadl Shanaa Foundation, Holy Quran Radio, Shams News Agency, APA Agency, Al Jazeera Network Office, Palestine TV, “AFP” Agency.

Additionally, many journalists were also subject to direct threats and incitement campaigns by Israeli pages on social media platforms, as happened with journalist Muthanna Al-Najjar from Gaza, as well as journalist Muhammad Turkman in the West Bank, apart from monitoring many Hebrew publications calling for the killing of journalists and describing them as saboteurs and terrorists.

Violations in the West Bank and Jerusalem:

Meanwhile, many Palestinian journalists were injured in the West Bank, and crews were beaten, detained, prevented from covering.

As 8 shooting cases have been recorded, as a result of which 3 journalists were injured. Additionally, PJS documented 21 cases of detention and preventing from coverage, 8 physical assault cases, 7 cases of confiscating and destroying journalists’ equipment, and some other violations .

Additionally, the Israeli forces have arrested 32 citizens who demonstrated for solidarity with Gaza.

Israeli crimes against journalists extend to Lebanon!

The Israeli occupation forces were not limited to targeting Palestinian journalists, but it extended to Lebanon, where the killing of Reuters journalist Issam Abdullah was announced and five journalists from Al Jazeera, Reuters and Agence France-Presse were injured in an Israeli bombing in southern Lebanon.

Journalists threatening:

Additionally, many journalists were also subject to direct threats and incitement campaigns by Israeli pages on social media platforms, as happened with journalist Muthanna Al-Najjar from Gaza, as well as journalist Muhammad Turkman in the West Bank, apart from monitoring many Hebrew publications calling for the killing of journalists and describing them as saboteurs and terrorists.

Moreover, the Israeli Minister of Communications, Shlomo Karei, was quoted to take a decision to stop providing Internet services to Internet companies in the Gaza Strip, starting at 00:00 on 10/14/2023, and to ban all types of services provided by Israeli Internet service providers to Gaza.

In this context, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate calls on the United Nations, especially UNESCO, to provide international protection for journalists from systematic killing and targeting, as well as to preserve their rights and their access to the Internet and other means of communication, so that they can deliver their media message to the Palestinians and the entire world about the war in Gaza.

As combating misleading information is one of the pillars of the International Code of Professional Ethics issued by the International Federation of Journalists, which must remain the backbone of the professional principles of journalists, and access to correct information is one of the basic rights of citizens.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the International Federation of Journalists and its trainers in its journalists’ safety network, in cooperation with the PJS, have updated the journalist’s safety guidelines for journalists in the field in line with the special situation of journalists in Palestine.

Farha

I watched Farha, as a film its very good. The sets, locations costumes and acting are very convincing, I could say I enjoyed the movie very much, but that feels wrong. Fahra is about a young Palestinian girl trapped in the nightmare that was 1948s Nakba, the massive campaign of violence that destroyed many Palestinian communities. So it feels wrong to use wordslike enjoyment and liked. The beginning of the film was pleasant enough seeing Fahra and the village children playing in the last days of the Mandate, but the conflict isn't far a way and many sequences are brutal and extremely unpleasant to watch.

I recommend watching it, but only if you're in an appropriate mood to do so, its hard viewing. I wasn't planning on watching it, I had not heard about it until yesterday. I was browsing social media when I saw the tail end of the argument about it. Several screenshots of article titles and journalists reacting very hostilely to it. In particular I remember a screenshot of some journalist I didn't recognise making a statement that pushed to seek out the film. I've tried finding it again but that's an impossible task so from memory it went like "I have no issue with criticism of Israel. I just don't like seeing all Jews being depicted as bloodthirsty monsters" or words to that effect.

That comment decided me for a couple of reasons, firstly I doubted that Netflix would stream a film that did depict all Jewish people as monsters, but more seriously because I understand the sentiment. I also really don't like it when communities and groups I'm connected to or feel connected to are shown to do horrible things. But, here's the issue its a film about the Nakba, and is based on the accounts of a survivor of the Nakba who ended up in a refugee camp in Syria.

From the credits of the film

After watching the film I looked up background details, and found that the director Darin J. Sallam was told of the account by her own mother. So while I can understand not liking how the Israeli soldiers are shown to be behaving, in fact I would be alarmed to encounter someone who wasn't disturbed by their behaviour. Like all films based on true accounts the film adds or changes details, unless we get a recording we'll never know for sure that the real Farha or Radiyyeh saw the murder of a family of refugees while the officer cracked jokes about it. But even if that's an embellishment, we do know the depiction of how the soldiers are behaving was accurate to the time, not only because of the testimonies of the Palestinians, 800,000 refugees is a lot of witnesses, but also the testimony of Jewish people and Isrealis.

One of the most popular entries on this very site is a 1948 open letter to the New York Times by Albert Einstein, Hannah Arendt and a dozen other prominent Jewish people denouncing the campaign of terror being carried out in the villages.

A shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin. This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had taken no part in the war, and had even fought off Arab bands who wanted to use the village as their base. On April 9 (The New York Times), terrorist bands attacked this peaceful village, which was not a military objective in the fighting, killed most of its inhabitants—240 men, women and children— and kept a few of them alive to parade as captives through the streets of Jerusalem. Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the Jewish Agency sent a telegram of apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan. But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of this massacre', publicized it widely, and invited all the foreign correspondents present in the country to view the heaped corpses and the general havoc at Dein Yassin. The Deir Yassin incident exemplifies the character and actions of the Freedom Party. Within the Jewish community they have preached an admixture of ultranationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority.

Bolding my own.

And as time has gone on, more and more accounts have surfaced of similar atrocities in the other 400 villages that were attacked and pillaged.

“The Jewish soldiers who took part in the massacre also reported horrific scenes: babies whose skulls were cracked open, women raped or burned alive in houses, and men stabbed to death,” the historian Ilan Pappe wrote in his book, “The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine,” describing accounts of a massacre that took place in the Palestinian village of Dawaymeh.

The Intercept

So even if the Israeli militants weren't present in the original story they're conistant with the period.

And while I can't be 100% certain of every word in the reaction I did note it said Jews, and not Israelis. Which is an interesting substitution. Not every Jewish person is Israeli, and to be blunt not every Israeli citizen is Jewish, there's strong overlap but the Venn diagram isn't a circle. In Fahra there are less than a dozen onscreen Israeli characters. They're all armed and they're pretty nasty people doing horrible things, but I would argue that has more to do with them being members of a radical military organisation that's open aim was to expand its borders by driving out its neighbours, then being Jewish. I don't have to qoute the Einstein-Arendt letter again do I?

I do understand why Israelis don't like this movie and wish to belittle and minimise it. While there was an existing Israeli movement and identity, and a network of communities in the Mandate it was the military campaigns of 1948 that cemented the existence of Isreal as a nation state. This means that the campaigns of violence were integral to its establishment and its founding myth. So acknowledging the darker parts of those episodes is an attack on the nation itself.

But that's just nationalism. There is nothing unique about Israel and its national history nor its people's sensitivity to criticism. Americans venerate their war of independence and founding fathers and really don't like people talking about slavery, and wars with the natives. British nationalists take pride in the Empire but will not be pleasant if the conversation goes beyond train travel and military vigour. Irish nationalists love the 1916-22 generation of heroes but will not welcome an accurate accounting for the campaigns of terror by the Free State. Algerian nationalists are proud of their nation's hard won battles against the domination of the French, but aren't interested in discussion the legacy of independent Algeria's discrimination and forced expulsions of its minority populations that were deemed not Algerian nor loyal enough to stay.

Keep going with the nationalist group of your choice, it does not matter which one you pick it never ends. If watching Farha makes you feel targetted then the problem isn't the movie, the problem is nationalism and the divisions and misery it causes.

Palestinians are allowed to explore and come to terms with their traumas and their history just as Israelis and everyone else is. I've seen comments by Palestinians praising the film for helping them do that which to me is the best praise it can get.

This is a perfect summary of the emotional experience of Farha.

The anti-imperialism of Joe Biden

"I'll have you know I'm from Dublin, that's right buddy, Dublin Illinois"

-random Irish American

Joe Biden the President of the United States of America is famous for his strange speaking manner and frequent lapses in concentration. He's also gotten some fame for his unabashed Irishness. I've seen that clip of him mugging off a BBC reporter a dozen or so times to pick just one example.

He's also not shy about bringing his heritage up during diplomatic affairs like a recent trip to East Jerusalem this month where he gave a speech which had this rather surprising fragment.

“…the background of my family is Irish American. And we have a long history not fundamentally unlike the Palestinian people, with Great Britain and their attitude toward Irish Catholics over the years for 400 years.”

I was quite shocked when I saw this interview, the fact that it was given in East Jerusalem, the part of the city that's still majority Palestinian despite repeated forced expulsions and home demolitions by the Israeli authorities seemed a strange venue for any American President but especially Joe Biden. But also the content of his words was very surprising and to be honest very difficult to parse, the actual clip is difficult to follow. Reading the transcript I've come to the conclusion he was trying to reach out to the Palestinian people by trying to build a connection by comparing the history of Ireland under Britain and Palestine under the Mandate government between the two World Wars.

Both periods involved a lot of violence and exploitation at the hands of the Imperial government, though curiously there were a lot of Irish soldiers serving in the mandate. That's the thing about Empires that gets obscured and in my view deliberately in national liberation discourse, the experience of subject peoples is not uniform, while it involves a lot of violence and exploitation for many, it also involves collaboration sometimes coerced, sometimes opportunistic and in a minority of cases genuinely. In effect the victims of the process become its enablers. The British military was a truly multi cultural institution during the Empire. Even after independence many Irishmen found employment and opportunities within it. Its not surprising to read about the Napoleonic Wars, the East India Company or the scramble for Africa and find Irish names, it should be surprising to find them in the Mandate as it was created in 1918, the same time Ireland was in the middle of a war for independence from the same Empire that was setting up shop in Jerusalem. This means aside from a few thousand recruited before 1918 and the Ulster contingents who are counted separately usually, those Irish soldiers made a free choice to enlist in that military. And the British Army to this day maintains Irish units which are open to citizens of the Republic.

So, its not wrong and the Mandate administration and its divide and rule tactics and bloody counterinsurgency campaigns against the Palestinians, and then later Israeli Jews has been overshadowed. But there something really strange and offensive about Biden making this comparison. President Biden is an American, he acts like an American and behaves like an American. More importantly he acts like an American President. Despite public statements of pride at his Irish heritage, its clear that the experiences of his ancestors has taught him very little beyond bluster. Instead of sympathising with the oppressed globally he's behaved like the head of an Imperial power. Famously the Irish in America came in their millions to the United States seeking refuge from oppression and crippling poverty, yet Joe has responded to other peoples attempting to do the same not with tolerance and understanding but with naked violence. ICE still exists, kids are still being put in cages and just recently the US gov has successfully pressured the Mexican government to pay for part of it.

WASHINGTON, July 12 (Reuters) - Mexico on Tuesday pledged to spend $1.5 billion to beef up its northern border as its leader met with U.S. President Joe Biden, who faces attacks from Republicans over his handling of immigration on the United States' southern flank.

Casting immigration as a "hemispheric challenge", Biden met Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and top Mexican officials in the White House to address U.S. concerns over migration and Mexico's desire for more worker visas.

...

Biden has struggled with more than 2.8 million arrests at the U.S.-Mexico border since he took office at the beginning of 2021, a record-setting level.

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/presidents-us-mexico-meet-after-summit-tensions-2022-07-12/

Oh and this is far from the first time Biden has commented on the plight of the Palestinians. Biden is a self declared Zionist and supporter of Israel.

“The Palestinians need to end incitement in the West Bank and rocket attacks in Gaza,” Biden said. “What they are teaching in their schools is still in the schoolbooks. No matter what legitimate disagreement they may have with Israel, it’s never a justification for terrorism, and no leader should fail to condemn as terrorists those who commit these brutalities.”

Biden said the Palestinian Authority should “acknowledge, flat-out, Israel’s right to exist — period – as an independent Jewish state and guarantee the borders.”

“I’m going to fully support the Taylor Force Act, which holds aid to the PA based on payments they make to terrorists in Israeli jails.” Biden also said he would restore funding to the Palestinian Authority for security cooperation with Israel.

“I’m going to reverse Trump’s administration steps [that] I think significantly undercut the prospects of peace and restore diplomatic relationships with the Palestinian Authority and assistance to support the Israeli Palestinian security cooperation and economic, humanitarian aid for Palestinian people.”

He said Israel should stop settlement activity, but “we also shouldn’t let the Palestinians off the hook” for issues like incitement and support for terrorism.

Biden assigned blame for the stalled peace process to Palestinian and Israeli leadership which are unwilling to take political risks through direct talks.

“I know Bibi well, for over 40 years,” Biden stated. “This moves [him] so far to the right.” Biden clarified, however, that it “does not justify cutting military assistance to the state of Israel.”

“My commitment to Israel is completely unshakable,” Biden said. “As president, I’m going to continue our security assistance under the historic memorandum of understanding that we signed together in 2016 and maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge. I’m not going to place conditions for the security assistance given the serious threats that Israel is facing, and this would be, I think, irresponsible.” (JewishInsider; Haaretz; Jerusalem Post, May 20, 2020)

 more here https://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/views-on-israel-of-u-s-presidential-candidates-2020-joe-biden

To be honest I think Biden is an excellent example of the limits of nationalism as a motivator for liberty and progress. He seems passionate about a rebellious Ireland, but in terms of actions it evaporates, there's nothing you can point to that distinguishes him from any other major world leader. Much like how in Ireland the heroes of the Anglo-Irish War unleashed years of even more vicious violence and terror during the Irish Civil War. The victors in that conflict who would shape independent Ireland used Imperial guns and ammunition to do so.  The Irish Free State was born from Imperial artillery and guarantees. Joe Biden is just another Irish American revelling in a rebel mystique from a distance of time and space and money and power.

Anarchist Tactic for Palestine by Albert Meltzer

Anarchist Tactic for Palestine

Written on the 25th of March 1939, by Albert Meltzer

The Arab revolution is centred on Palestine. The re-awakening of the Arab nation and the consequent nationalist revolution has brought the masses of Palestine in conflict with British Imperialism. Every movement against British Imperialism must be welcomed as the rulers of this country rule (or, synonymously, misrule) the larger part of the world’s colonial peoples. The opposition of revolutionaries to British Imperialism and its allies must be taken for granted.

The clashing of two nationalisms (Jewish and Arab in this case) has inevitably given rise to controversy abroad. In the Houses of Parliament sympathy is naturally pro-Zionist; as one MP is reputed to have said, when asked why he supported the Jews in Palestine against the Arabs: “In my constituency I have thousands of Jewish voters, I haven’t a single Arab”. The Labour Party, free from responsibility in the Government of a bloody suppression of all vestiges of Arab life, urges the Government to insist upon a policy of a Jewish National State. The majority opinion here seems to be pro-Zionist, perhaps because the Zionists are so definitely pro-Imperialist while the Arabs are vaguely accused of being pro-Fascist. It would be a surprise therefore, to read about the Government’s rejection of the Jewish side in the Palestinian talks (up to the moment of writing) if the Government had not to reckon with millions of other Arab and Moslem subjects in the Empire. Chamberlain’s policy of `Appeasement` has up to now not been primarily in the interests of the Democratic Imperialisms, and in the Palestine issue, again, he is far less concerned with the maintenance of Imperialism than his `Left` opponents!

What is the case for Zionism? Zionism represents the age-old desire of the Rabbis to return to the `Holy Land`. The significance of the word `Zion` (the Biblical and traditional name) will be noted. The Rabbis, whose jobs depend on the keeping-up of the race-barriers and the consequent survival of the religion, in the fear of assimilation, have fostered these artificial laws in order to maintain, by tribal `totems and taboos` a separate race. Naturally, they have failed, and Zionism is the way they are endeavouring to succeed. There is to-day no pure race, despite the claims of Hitler and the Rabbis. It will be noted that the revival of Judaism has only been a reaction to pogroms and persecution. In times and countries where there has been complete racial and religious toleration, assimilation has begun; intolerance always defeating its own ends.

Herzl began the move for `Back to Zion`. Was his primary concern for the refugees, then fleeing from the pogroms of the Tsar? On the contrary, Herzl refused far more suitable land in Africa, insisting on the `Holy` Land. Finally, the Balfour War Government promised Palestine to the Jews, as well as to the Arabs, when Turkey was defeated. Since the Mandate, the introduction of capitalist Western ideas has undoubtedly benefited the Arab workers, as has the introduction of the proletarian organisations of Europe. But this no excuse, whatever the Zionists may say. Capitalism introduced in this fashion benefited everywhere the working class; the same thing happening in Russia was hailed as a triumph of `communism`. It was nothing of the sort. Despite the coming of capitalist benefits, the struggle against capitalist malevolences must be fought.

Originally there was no agitation against Jewish immigration; moreover there was never previously any anti-Semitism in the Arab countries. Not until immigration became colonisation, and the aim of a Jewish state, did the trouble commence. The Zionist leaders, keeping up a pretence that they were struggling against Fascism, have been the motivators of Fascism in Palestine and have the responsibility for the heavy toll of wasted lives. Fascism? From the `Jewish Hitler`, Vladimir Jabotinsky, with his `Storm Troop` Revisionists to the Rothschild and Imperialist Zionists in London (who take good care to keep out of the `Holy` country), from the `Nuremberg` laws of the synagogue to the basic ideology of Zionism (nationalism based on race and not on country) the whole of the Jewish nationalist movement has been as fascist as any other nationalist movement which has left its early liberal phase. The labour leaders like Ben Gurion accuse the Arabs of being in the pay of Hitler and Mussolini and under that pretence act the Hitlers and Mussolinis. Meanwhile they dupe the masses of Jewish workers in the pogromist countries that there is only one future – Palestine – and furnish the excuses for the anti-Semitic governments.

Undoubtedly the Arab revolution must have the support of the workers abroad. Let us not be duped as `Revolutionary Socialists` have been duped, however. There is no hope for the future in a Palestine under the Grand Mufti and Company. There is no reason to suppose that a bourgeois nationalist government will do more for the working class than did the Imperialist government. The lesson of Ireland alone affords proof. The struggle must be against Imperialism first, against Zionism secondly, and lastly against the bourgeois nationalist government when created.

There is no evidence that the present nationalist movement is capable of such a task. The task is to forget the past and to build up a revolutionary labour movement in Palestine, without consideration of nationality. The only hope there for workers’ unity is a movement that will not include within its ranks the religious leaders of Judaism or Mohammedism, and exclusive of Jewish or Arab or British exploiters. From which side it will come remains to be seen, there is little hope of a revolution in Palestine becoming a social revolution. It may be necessary at the moment to struggle alongside the petty bourgeoisie against Imperialism, but it must be borne in mind that they can neither play a revolutionary role, and that neither the Nehrus in India nor the Muftis in Palestine can be considered as friends, but only as pawns, of the revolutionary-working class.

The programme of the new Palestinian labour movement must be for the overthrow of the Mandate; for autonomy; for a struggle against the autonomous government when created, for workers’ control and freedom. The anarchist tactic for the situation in Palestine is the only road that will lead away from the present debacle; the co-operation of the Arab revolutionaries throughout the Near East, in co-operation with anti-Zionist Jewish minority and all workers, of whatever race, will alone push forward the opportunity for a complete revolution.

1948 Einstein-Arendt letter to the New York Times

In December 1948 Menachen Begin a Zionist politician infamous for his extreme nationalism -even amongst fellow Zionists- began a tour of the United States, hoping to generate publicity and raise funds and support while his party campaign in the elections of that year.

Appalled at the visit and the warm welcome he was receiving a group of 28 Jewish intellectuals including Albert Einstein and Hannah Arendt published a joint open letter to the New York Times denouncing Begin, his party, his policies and the general campaigns of atrocity and intimidation in Jewish communities and the Palestinian Arab population carried out by Menachen's followers and fellow far right Zionist paramilitaries. The letter can be found on Archive.org but the OCR scans are full of errors which make reading difficult, though the scans are clearer.

I think its an interesting document so transcribed it correcting errors.

New Palestine Party

Visit of Menachen Begin and Aims of Political Movement Discussed

To the Editor or The New York Times : Amongst the most disturbing political phenomena of our time is the emergence in the newly created state of Israel of the "Freedom Party" (Tnuat Haherut), a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties. It was formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine.

The current visit of Menachen Begin, leader of this party, to the United States is obviously calculated to give the impression of American support for his party in the coming Israeli elections, and to cement political ties with conservative Zionist elements in the United States. Several Americans of national repute have lent their names to welcome his visit it is inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world, if correctly informed as to Mr. Begin's political record and perspectives, could add their names and support to the movement he represents. Before irreparable damage is done by way of financial contributions, public manifestations in Begin's behalf, and the creation in Palestine of the impression that a large segment of America supports Fascist elements in Israel, the American public must be informed as to the record and objectives of Mr. Begin and his movement. The public avowals of Begin's party are no guide whatever to its actual character.

Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism, whereas until recently they openly
preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do in the future.

Attack on Arab Village

Like other Fascist parties they have been used to break strikes, and have themselves pressed for the destruction of free trade unions. In their stead they have proposed corporate unions on the Italian Fascist model. During the last years of sporadic anti-British violence, the IZL and Stern groups inaugurated a reign of terror in the Palestine Jewish community. Teachers were beaten up for speaking against them, adults were shot for not letting their children join them. By gangster methods, beatings, windowsmashing, and wide-spread robberies, the terrorists intimidated the population and exacted a heavy tribute. The people of the Freedom Party have had no part in the constructive achievements in Palestine. They have reclaimed no land, built no settlements, and only detracted from the Jewish defense activity. Their much-publicized immigration endeavors were minute, and devoted mainly to bringing in Fascist compatriots.

Discrepancies Seen

The discrepancies between the bold claims now being made by Begin and his party, and their record of past performance in Palestine bear the imprint of no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and misrepresentation are means, and a "Leader State" is the goal. In the light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known in this country. It is all the more tragic that the top leadership of American Zionism has refused to campaign against Begin's efforts, or even to expose to its own constituents the dangers to Israel from supporting Begin. The undersigned therefore take this means of publicly presenting a few salient facts concerning Begin and his party; and of urging all concerned not to support this latest manifestation of fascism.
