Elizeo Rekluzo, scienculo kaj konscienculo - Elisée Reclus, Scientist and Conscientious Objector

 Neordinara scienculo

Francio estus nun Alain Minc).
unuafoje Interhelpon, t.e. koopera kunagado inter individuoj, kiel alian forton

celis politikan pseŭdo-neŭtralecon kaj sciencisman objektivecon, kiuj estis

≪ Pro moralaj kaj politikaj kialoj ambaŭ malkonsentis, ke bestoj
same kiel homoj senĉese luktas ĉiuj kontraŭ ĉiuj. ≫

realo estis iom alia.

Elisée Reclus, Scientist and Conscientious Objector

Not an Ordinary Scientist

Elisée Reclus was an atypical scientist. Engels considered him as nothing more than a compiler; mainly because he believed libertarian communism was in opposition to Marxism, and on the other hand Reclus never proposed a new theory of his own. Its true that regarding man in the world Reclus preferred to reinterpret the latest knowledge and combined it with his libertarian principles  in order to integrate them into a philosophy of life and action. Because of this undogmatic approach he was neglected for a long time, his work has only recently received recognition from the academic community, although he had received gold medals from both the London and Paris geographical societies and had been famous during his life with over 30,000 pages published in the field of geography, including the first full treatise on physical geography.

In his department; geography, he is often seen as a pioneer of social geography, urban geography, geopolitics, and ecology of the landscape. In fact, he thought that in the history of societies humanity should be placed at the heart of geography (no one ever did this); that humanity was the chief actor in nature, and the physical world: this viewpoint, very much the heir to the Age of Enlightenment, very much anthropocentric, is currently very much reviving due to the uncontrolled power of our species on the planet. Elisée Reclus was less of an ecologist (ecological scientist) and more of a planet-conscious scientist; so one could consider him a pioneer of planetary-scale thinking on environmental protection, the defence of animals an the arrangement of nature.

Let us draw attention to another scientific contribution of Reclus, less visible and almost totally unknown, yet quite remarkable. Reclus was a close friend of Peter Kropotkin, an Anarchist and geographer just like him, and they - both exiled in Switzerland- exchanged much. Both atheists, they admired Darwin, who explained the creation of the world without the intercession of a God. However they did not agree that the only engine of biological evolution was fierce competition (struggle for life) which appears even in the title of Darwin's main work [On the Origin of species via Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life]. Due to moral and political reasons, both disagreed that humans and animals ceaselessly struggled in competition of everyone against everyone else. They were particularly opposed to Herbert Spencer, who used Darwin's work (Social Darwinism) to argue that capitalism was natural, his successor in France would be Alain Minc [Businessman and political advisor]. Reclus (in a few pages) and Kropotkin (in Mutual Aid as a factor of evolution, an important work published in 1902) proposed as Mutual Aid e.g. co-operative collaboration between individuals as another strength of evolution. They gave many examples of mutual aid within the animal world, especially the colonial societies of Bees and Ants. Creatures which don't mate with but work for a queen that alone lays the eggs: this embarrassed Darwin as altruism was the rule here. Only in 1960 has science successfully explained this paradox, and today biology acknowledges that the evolution of both species and societies is the result of competition and mutual aid.

Engaged Geographer

Reclus's multifaceted and engaged approach seemed a bit strange to his contemporaries because he gave geography to the people, when it was still a young department born at the request of governors and military. Vidal del Blache, the conservative and agnostic founder of French geography (who published his first works immediately after Reclus) aimed at political pseudo-neutrality and scientific objectivity that were favouring the spread of his ideas in the university circles. For its part, the anarchist communist Reclus fully accepted his partisanship and his revolutionary commitment; he no longer regarded Man as an observer, but as the agent of the transformation of the natural world, for which he must bear responsibility.

That not-so-usual engagement that made him long infamous makes him now famous, because now it’s hard not to acknowledge that his fears foreshadowed our current state of the world: man-dominated nature, and competition-ruled man.

However, because Recluse was born into a multi-child family, he did not so vigorously anticipate the birth control he criticized, believing that the rational exploitation of natural resources was enough to satisfy the world's needs - in his time this might be right, but now it is becoming more and more more wrong.

Man with a Conscience

The son of an ardent pastor who recognized only his conscience to judge between God and him, Elisée constantly demanded freedom. He placed it in a strict system of thought and action that made him a lay saint.

Words alone were not enough for him, he was an ethical vegetarian at a time when no one spoke about the rights of animals, even in revolutionary circles. A school governor on an American plantation, he refused to enjoy the benefits of this state of affairs and hated slavery, he married a woman of colour as a statement of anti-racist commitment. During the Paris Commune, he took up arms and was condemned to hard labour and then exile, which he voluntarily continued until his death. He publicly supported the Anarchist attacks at the end of 19th Century which cost him the post of university Professor that had just been granted to him in Belgium.

Basically he was a free man, especially an original scientist, so carefree and so respectful of others that he long remained unrecognised; creator of an altruistic, wonderfully coherent and preconceived thinking system, an honest moralist who refused any compromise, and who preferred to make a living by the pen: in other words the opposite of a career.

Additional Comment about the Contents

"Due to moral and political reasons, both disagreed that humans and animals ceaselessly struggled in competition of everyone against everyone else"

It is often customary to present Kropotkin's views in this way, but the reality seems to be a little different. Although he did write Mutual Aid to counter the theses of the social Darwinists, he did so on the basis of convictions he had already acquired forty years earlier, before his political radicalization, on the occasion of a research mission in Siberia. There the inter-individual competition was much less fierce than under the tropics, where Darwin himself collected the material for his studies. So, most likely Kropotkin's scientific observations (consistent with other works published in Russian at the time, so largely unknown to the Western public) played a role in the formation of his political convictions, and not the other way around (even if he later unquestionably put his scientific knowledge at the service of their ideas).
