Wilhelm Liebknecht on War & Revolution a translation

So its probably noticeable that the productivity on this blog has slowed considerably recently, and much of the focus has shifted to translations from Esperanto and its working class archives.  Apologies to any readers not in favour of this redirection. But I assure you the translations of brief articles and letters were leading to something. I've been able to translate several more substantial works that to the best of my knowledge have never appeared in English, including works by some prominent (at least in their day) socialist activists from multiple tendencies. I've decided to seriously consider publishing them in one form or another, and have made some progress with some very nice people. So far though, most of those projects are still being worked out, so there is still some chance of delays or unforeseen obstacles.

Though I'm happy to state that at least one project has been published and can be sent directly to your device of choice.

On Offence and Defence; a Speech on War & Revolution is my translation of a speech by the Socialist leader Wilhelm Liebknecht, recorded in the 1870s in the aftermath of the Paris Commune. It attacks nationalism, militarism and instead urges social revolution. It also expands into a general denouncement of industrial capitalism and rebukes many of the common anti-socialist talking points. It's aged rather well, all things considered. Please consider reading it if you're interested in political history and speech craft.

M. Ĵ. Perlow : Usona Socialista Movado - The American Socialist Movement

M. Ĵ. Perlow : Usona Socialista Movado

de M. Ĵ. Perlow
(Daŭrigo)

Workers Party of America (Laborista Partio de Ameriko). - En Septembro 1919, organiziĝis du Komunistaj Partioj. Dum malpli ol kvar monatoj, ili libere propagandis por Komunismo.

La "I.W.W."

Kaj tie la "I.W.W." naskiĝis.

The American Socialist Movement

Workers Party of America: Two Communist parties were founded in September 1919. They freely propagandised for Communism for less than four months. In January 1920 the Government struck and broke up the parties and declared communism illegal.

Since legal Communist work could not be done clandestine communist parties were organised. The latter were embarrassed because their propaganda couldn't reach many workers. In order to successfully promote communism one of the clandestine parties organised a legal organisation under the name "American Workers Association" which is was under the control of a hidden Communist party group and promoted communism using the name "Revolutionary Socialism". At the same time left wing members of the Socialist party formed a new group called "Workers Council" and began agitating for an openly Communist party. From these two organisations and other socialist groups came the Workers Party of America.

The first congress took place in New York in 24, 25, 26 of December 1921. 114 delegates attended, representing organisations from nearly every state in the Union.

"Workers Party is the communist party of the USA, its goal is to educate and organise the working class to abolish capitalism and to establish the workers republic".

The WP consists of 16 sections divided by language, united in a national organisation.

The number of members is 20,000 with only 10% being English speakers.

The party publishes 9 daily newspapers in foreign languages, and 18 weekly and monthly newspapers in English and foreign languages. The official newspaper of the party is The Worker.

The acting Secretary is C.E. Ruthenberg and its offices are at 799 Broadway, Room 405, New York City.

The IWW (Industrial Workers of the World)

From the history of the IWW,
In the Autumn of 1904 six leading activists of the revolutionary workers movement met up, and after an exchange of opinions and discussions on the living conditions for the working class in America at the time, they reached a decision to host a larger meeting.

Invitations were sent out to 36 individuals who were active in radical workers organisations within the socialist political movement to met secretly in Chicago on the 2nd of January 1905.

On the fixed date the conference opened with 30 attendants, elaborated the Declaration of Industrial Unification which convened a meeting in the city of Chicago that on 27 if June 1905 with the intention of forming an organisation in accordance with the principles stated in the declaration.

This third meeting opened with 186 delegates from 34 state, district, national and local organisations, which together represented around 90,000 members and the I.W.W. was born.

The IWW is a class struggle organisation which works to abolish capitalism and to build an Industrial Communist Society. Its true that I.W.W. does not believe in political struggle, but only in the economic, and therefore the organisation of the IWW is by industry. The IWW believes that only One Big Union of all workers organised by industry can destroy Capitalist society.

The Principles of the IWW - The working class and the employing class have nothing in common. There can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of workers while the few who make up the employing class have all the good things of life.

Between these two classes a struggle must go on until the workers of the world organise as a class, take possession of the earth and means of production, and abolish the wage system.

We find that the centring of the management of industries into fewer and fewer hands makes the trade unions unable to cope with the ever growing power of the employing class. The trade unions foster a state of affairs which allows one set of workers to be pitted against another set of workers in the same industry, thereby helping defeat one another in wage wars. Moreover, the trade unions aid the employing class to mislead the workers into the belief that the working class have interests in common with their employers.

These conditions can be changed and the interest of the working class upheld only by an organisation formed in such a way that all its members in any one industry, or in all industries if necessary, cease work whenever a strike or lockout is on in any department thereof, thus making an injury to one an injury to all.

Instead of the conservative motto, “A fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work,” we must inscribe on our banner the revolutionary watchword, “Abolition of the wage system.”

It is the historic mission of the working class to do away with capitalism. The army of production must be organised, not only for everyday struggle with capitalists, but also to carry on production when capitalism shall have been overthrown. By organising industrially we are forming the structure of the new society within the shell of the old.

***
From the beginning of its birth until today the IWW is persecuted and its history of suffering is famous throughout the world. It is not possible to calculate every crime committed against the IWW. But to illustrate I need only cite a few, in the city of Lawrence (Massachusetts) during the textile industry strike, around 900 IWW members were incarcerated. In the years 1912-13 1800 members were incarcerated during the textile strike in Paterson New Jersey. In 1918 in Bisbee Arizona, 1164 workers the majority of whom were IWW members, were forcibly deported. During the war 1327 IWW members were imprisoned.

Tarring and feathering, torture of the tongue, beating... these are some of the physical tortures inflicted by American police on members of the IWW. And that is not enough, their possessions are confiscated, all civil and self defence rights are taken away and finally imprisonment and exile, and so on.

The present state of the IWW - The number of IWW members is above 50,000. But more than one and a half million membership cards have been printed. The membership of the IWW consists of immigrant workers: sawmill workers, farm workers, builders, longshoremen, metalworkers, weavers and railwaymen.

The IWW is made up of 29 industrial unions. They are: Agriculture; four industrial unions, Construction; three industrial unions, Mines; three industrial unions, Manufacturing and General Transportation; five industrial unions, Public Service; six industrial unions.

The legislature of the IWW are the General Meeting, the Industrial Association meetings and the Industrial District meetings.

The administrative organ of the IWW is the General Administration, the Secretary-General Treasurer and the secretaries of the Industrial Unions.

The present publications of the IWW are twenty newspapers (in English and foreign languages) and monthly bulletins of the Industrial Unions.

The office of the IWW is at 1001 W.Madison Str Chicago Illinois, USA.

El Usono (1913) - From America

Kvankam sesdekjarulo, li angle paroladis verve, altvoĉe kaj gestade kiel suditalano kaj tio helpis multe lin kompreni ankaŭ de ne anglaj homoj.

From America

The Silk weavers of Paterson lost the strike that they had bravely fought for five months. The cause of the defeat was mainly hunger and that only 5,000 of the 25,000 strikers were members of the IWW, the support funds were not sufficient but the number of opponents were more than sufficient. Because apart from the capitalists and their guard dogs the police, the strike was also opposed by the national American Federation of Labor (AFL). The strike also failed to gain the sympathy of New York's Social Democratic politicians and their newspapers, since the American's did not support the tactics of direct action and sabotage favoured by the syndicalists. Despite the lack of support from them the IWW is growing and expanding amongst the proletariat everywhere. Despite losing this strike something else was won; the solidarity of between 15,000-25,000 striking workers who bravely stood by the strike until hunger forced them to return to work.

The IWW received a guest from England, Tom Mann, who spoke at the meeting in New York on the 3rd of August to several thousand workers. Mann, a fervent radical syndicalist theorist spoke with interest and conviction about the plight of workers in England, Australia, South Africa and Germany. Although sixty years old, he spoke in English with a loud voice and gestured like a southern Italian, this helped many in the audience who did not speak English well to understand him.  Mann recommended that we support the IWW under Bill Haywood, and will give further speeches in other cities.

The middle of July another great strike of 163,000 railway workers from 43 Eastern rail companies was in sight, but the issue was settled by politicians in Washington, so the strike did not occur.

Presently in New York there are on going strikes by raincoat makers, laundry workers and knitters, these strikes are supported by the Jewish Labor Union, and it looks like all of them will gain something.

A big scandal happened in Seattle Washington, where the Secretary of State of the Navy, Daniels, spoke publicly and stated that the Red Flag was the enemy of every nation and should not be flown anywhere. This is why on that evening a group of drunken sailors feeling themselves brave attacked the red flag at the street corner where socialists give speeches, and then forced their way into the offices of the IWW and Socialist Party, and broke everything. In their militaristic or patriotic drunkenness they came across the offices of the Salvation Army -a pious army- and tore up everything they found until they came across some pictures inscribed with saintly passages from the bible, then they retreated to their ship and regretted their blasphemous error. Now the Socialists have sent an important protest to the United States government, but no one so far knows the government's response.

In Binghampton New Jersey, 65 women workers lost their lives during a fire at a factory for children's clothing. The same thing happened three years earlier in New York at the Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire that cost 143 human lives, and the factory owners despite their responsibility for the loss of human life were found not guilty by the judges; the same will happen at this burning, only that here in New York state there is a new method of politics. Governor Sulzer opposes the most powerful politician Murphy and holds him responsible for the fire because he ignored a labour inspection, but this is a political scam, and again none of the wounded survivors or the grieving mothers of the lost children will receive a cent from irresponsible lose of human life. Politician Murphy is now accusing Governor Sulzer of bribery and fraudulent theft. We radicals know full well that all bourgeois politicians can be bribed and would not be surprised if they had to condemn police lieutenant Becker to death and punish many other police officers or even Senator Stillwell for bribery. This isn't just happening in the state of New York, they are finding scams in the state of Illinois also, there are bribes amongst the politicians and the state appears to be financially bankrupt.

To be brief currently in addition to the COVID disaster the Bolsonaro government is supporting attacks on indigenous Brazilians land rights carried out by big business including gold speculators. The Brazilian Indigenous movement has been fighting back and in solidarity the Federação das Organizações Sindicalistas Revolucionárias do Brasil (FOB) and others have been providing assistance.
