You've also fallen into the trap of denying claims that have been admitted by senior members of the organisation you wish to defend.

But here's the kicker, even you are being sincere your experience does not in anyway alter or deny the overwhelmingly negative experiences many others have had at the hands of the Salvation Army.

You also didn't read this blog post very well before writing your defense, I am not the author of this pamphlet nor the creator of the video. That you talk of understanding my "hate" shows how little attention you've paid to the criticism's levelled at the organisation.

Also you're not fooling anyone by claiming to not be a Christian while praising the institution of church. I have read many of the articles you make reference to. I believe those references and articles are wrong, personally. (I will metaphorize with a wonder of nature. The Grand Canyon--you can study it, see photos of it and think you know it. But that moment when you actually stand at its edge, the sooner you realize how wrong you were in thinking you knew it.) That has been my experience, and it now provides a clear corrective lens through which I discern information I read about The Salvation Army.
And so, Red Mike, from my experience, and with all respect to you...
I suppose I would leave you with the challenge that was given to me in November of 2009. Just go volunteer a few hours at a local Salvation Army. Just take the step to go and see for yourself. You have very evidently done what you believe is solid research, and a fair amount of it. It is evident in the way you wrote this post! You are an intellectually intelligent individual, that is beyond clear.
I challenge you to and see for yourself if your findings are correct. In scholarly terms, go and test your thesis and hypothesis. After spending some time working with them and volunteering,if your findings are confirmed, then continue to voice your opinion as you do. But I suspect you will be surprised! I suspect that you might even begin to question the validity of your post.
I look forward to hearing if you will take up the challenge and what you may or may not discover through it.
I always welcome respectful and edifying dialogue!
(Again, I cannot emphasize enough that I only want to share with you what I did in a setting of respect. I respect your right to disagree with every word I have said if you choose to do so.I trust you will also.
I won't engage in arguments or debates, I just wanted to share my "EXPERIENCE"
Thanks for allowing me to comment!)

Respectfully!
FredAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1663766032453458145.post-35197772647714378962016-09-23T00:55:35.467+01:002016-09-23T00:55:35.467+01:00***REPLY PART 1 OF 2***
I once thought as you abou...***REPLY PART 1 OF 2***
I once thought as you about The Salvation Army, Mike.
My name is Fred.
I am 56. I have volunteered for The Salvation Army for 6 years. For 23 years prior I "hated" The Salvation Army, simply because of what I had heard and been told about them.
I was challenged by someone who knew the Army, whom I respected, to go and volunteer.
I did, reluctantly at first. I started at one hour a week in their food pantry. I was going to commit to two weeks. That was it!
After two weeks, I was hooked. I had never before met people so selfless and with such a passion and desire to see someone leave their building with just a small glimmer of hope that things were going to be ok.
I've witnessed hundreds, maybe thousands leave with tears of joy in their eyes.
I've seen everyone, seemingly, from every walk of life, even homosexuals, come and have their needs met. The Salvation Army where I volunteer even tries to resource High Schoolers who are LGBT with anti bullying resources because they know that gay teens are often, statistically, the most bullied and can lead them to suicide. They believe that if they can resource someone to anti bullying counselors, maybe a life can be saved from needless loss. (I only mention "homosexuals" specifically, because it is specific to the topic of this blog post.)
I expected them to be cramming religion down people's throats. Not once, did this happen.
Yes, they are very openly Christian. It was very obvious, not by what they said, but in the way that served others with joy, humility and selflessness.
Today, 6 years later, I volunteer 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. It is one of the best things I have ever committed to doing to make a difference in my community. I wish I had done it 29 years ago when I first heard the horrible things about The Salvation Army and began to hate them. I missed out on years of service.

The truth is, I am NOT a Christian and I have never felt so loved and appreciated by anyone.
The truth is, I am GAY and I have never felt so loved and appreciated.
I have never had anyone give me such an opportunity to make a true difference in people. I have never been anywhere where I have felt so loved and accepted in all of life than in The Salvation Army. Even my own Father and Mother who are not religious at all, (he would call himself the "atheist of atheists") disowned me when I was 16 because i was gay.
I have never seen so many people in my life be loved so freely, including myself!
In the last 6 years I have been to 10 Salvation Army units for events and volunteer opportunities. My experience as described above has been the same across the board. I see complete transparency and consistency in their philosophy of ministry and service across the board. I have been IMPRESSED and MOVED TO COMPASSION beyond words that I could describe.

Again, Mike...
I completely understand your hate for the Army. As I said, I felt the same way for 23 years of my life. It wasn't just a phase. It was 23 years! (I tell people now, it was in ignorance)
However, based on my experience over 6 years in around 10 different units, I would respectfully disagree with the "factual" findings as you have outlined.
Again, please hear respect in this for you as a person and your feelings.
But in reading this, I hurt for the damage that these false "facts" might have on such a phenomenal organization and church! (I am gay and am 100% thrilled they are a church because I think if they weren't, I wouldn't feel as loved as I feel from them.) I am moved to tears as I write these words.

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1663766032453458145.post-16374636060553759442016-06-05T18:35:26.004+01:002016-06-05T18:35:26.004+01:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.Mary Gothinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10061095173851459731noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1663766032453458145.post-6353108098200171882016-04-03T18:37:06.018+01:002016-04-03T18:37:06.018+01:00Well according to this report 45% of his support b...Well according to this report 45% of his support base have bachelor degrees or higher, and a significant proportion of the rest are professional types in management, whatever that's worth. http://www.publicseminar.org/2016/03/the-republicans-trump-problem/#.VwFUWXqxXnGRed Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00553505839836886797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1663766032453458145.post-22228333824476128952016-04-01T15:45:21.275+01:002016-04-01T15:45:21.275+01:00The contributions of the local historian in the fi...The contributions of the local historian in the film Dieter Previn, who points out "...that was the hallway, this was his bathroom" without question make for some of the most interesting and scholarly relevant insights I have ever heard on film. However, as a social scientist I found your term interesting, as you are using an identity label that is designed to express disapproval."

You can't be a very good scientist then if someone disapproving of a group like the SA strikes you as worthy of note in itself.
"The issue of homosexuality is a difficult issue for those who would say that they are Christian or Muslim."

Actually no it isn't. There are plenty of Muslims and Christians who don't really care either way, homosexuality is legal in countries with Muslim and Christian as it is in Israel a Jewish majority territory. You seem to be using the "No true Scotsman" fallacy. Which is odd since that is one of the first fallacies social scientists are taught to avoid. Again moralistic excuses not scientific discourse.

" Their historic teachings clash with how our society has changed. The term homophobic of course does not appear in any medical texts or psychiatric journals."

Yes it does, especially in social science journals, since homophobia is social phenomenon.
"I am not convinced that members of the Salvation Army or any other Christian or Muslim community are afraid of people who happen to be gay."

Really? that's a very strong claim, please show me the research that you have conducted on these three groups to determine that?

"Perhaps the writer of this blog about the Salvation Army is suffering from Christophobia? What resear...What social scientist are you exactly? What research have you done and why would you comment anonymously? Surely as a social scientist you would know the importance of establishing your experience with the topic at hand?
I actually doubt very much that you are a social scientist since your commentary is largely devoid of any scientific analysis, in fact it reads like moral apologism.

"A lot of men (and women) may have spent money on booze that should have gone on bread for the family."
And a lot of people give money to groups like the SA that should have gone on bread to the family etc. This is not Social Science argument, its an unsubstantiated statement, it's also of questionable relevance since most people who rely on services provided by the SA have no family or have lost all contact with them.

"The medical world tell's that alcoholics need a dry house and dry way of life if they are to deal with alcohol addiction."
That is a total lie. There are many treatments for addictions with varying levels of success depending on the substance, the person in question and there current environment. The dry house is only one option and it is not always the best option and in some cases can be counterproductive.

You also don't seem to know much about the "devout Christian churches" otherwise you would not make such a ludicrous claim as "Their stance on many issues is no different from the Church of Rome, The Church of England, in fact, all of the mainstream churches." When every "mainstream church" has major differences of opinion on nearly every issue? That's the reason these different churches continue to exist.

As a social scientist with a (I assume) background in Religious institutions you should be aware of this.
"It is a shame that a church like the Salvation Army has got itself caught up in Government and politics. Perhaps it would be much better for the Salvation Army to express it's mission without becoming linked to political programmes and projects. "

Again, if you were a genuine social scientist you would know that the SA as an organisation was always tied to government and politics given that all of its activities relate to convincing government and populations to accept its own brand of morality. I have to ask is it really wise for you too advance an opinion on a subject you know so little about. Surely as a social scientist you're aware of the problems of advancing an opinion before you've bothered to study the issue at length?
Red Mikehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00553505839836886797noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1663766032453458145.post-73419281139496102942014-11-22T13:39:19.090+00:002014-11-22T13:39:19.090+00:00"Lastly it is worth nothing that the group..."Lastly it is worth nothing that the group's newfound confidence has also allowed them to increase their influence over the population at large. They have stepped up their lobbying efforts in relation to gambling, sexuality and drug use and with social conservatives ruling both the ALP and Coalition they have scored a number of victories in issues like stopping safe injecting rooms.

I recall reading a story by Gerard Egan:

....a person walking alongside a river sees someone drowning. This person jumps in, pull the victim out, and begins artificial respiration. While this is going on, another person calls out for help; the rescuer jumps into the water again and pulls the new victim out. This process repeats itself several times until the resuer gets up and walks away from the scene. A bystander approaches and asks in suprise where he is going, to which the resuer replies "I'm going upstream to find out who's pushing all these people in and see if I can stop it!"

Egan G. & Cowan M. (1979). People in Systems: A Model for Development in the Human-Service Professions and Education. California. Wadsworth Inc.

This is a useful debate. If we can't stop the tide of change in society, do we facilitate it. For example, if we can't prevent under age sex, do we take action to make it safer, and thus enable and condone it? If we can't prevent drug abuse, do we decriminalise it with the hope that it will become safer?

"At the same time the politicians have increased the level of censorship and passed a number of laws restricting civil rights. For the Salvation Army all this has been a bonus, for the rest of us a disaster."

How so, it would be helpful to qualify the above statement.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
