"You might also have heard the story that Star Trek was the first show in America and probably the world to show an interracial kiss, thats true however again there was a bit of a cop out, you see that famous civil rights milestone takes place in the episode Plato's stepchildren, where a race of mentally powerful aliens force Uhura and Kirk to kiss for there amusement while both actors kick and scream and make it clear that they ain't consenting, essentially making the message be less, love is colour blind and more only a depraved alien intelligence would be pleased by "race treason". But to be fair most of these qualifiers where studio mandates, Gene Roddenberry the original idea man for the show stated that he wanted to go further, saying if he could of got away with it he would have made Kirk and Spock gay lovers"
ReplyDeleteI don't really care about star trek, but I watched the video and read your piece. I'm glad I did. Kudos
I know this article is old, but it essentially does not explain why the federation in Star Trek is not marxist. Most of the conditions for communism mentioned in the communist manifesto are contained within federation society:

"I know this article is old, but it essentially does not explain why the federation in Star Trek is not marxist. " Actually it does provided you know what Marxism is, I see that you don't so I'll clarify further.
ReplyDelete"Most of the conditions for communism mentioned in the communist manifesto are contained within federation society"
Yeah that's not remotely true. Communism is a Stateless and Classless society, the Federation is quite clearly a state it has a President a government, a military, law enforcement and some of its planets like Betazed still have a nobility. Star Fleet has a rank structure and so has a Hierarchy and since in the show the rest of Federation society operates hierarchically they must have some class distinctions.
Furthermore the Communist Manifesto does not describe a Communist Society, its an action plan for a group of Communists to build what Marx called "the Workers State" which would enable the transition to Communism.

Here's a tip for you, I like that essay but its premise is flawed, the author doesn't know what Communism is and makes the error of substituting it with the USSR. And honestly even then some of their arguments are deeply flawed. A lot of it is "this happened in the show, it also happened in Russia therefore evidence of Communism" things like Coup's, Censorship, Powerful Militaries etc. Because as we all know such things were unheard before 1917.
